Will Facebook hear the music?

Facebook is in talks with major U.S. record labels to bring music to its users, according to a Reuters report.

While the talks are deemed "preliminary" by sources close to both companies, Facebook rival MySpace is also said to be involved in similar discussions.

Though often overlooked, the lure of free music is seen by many internet companies as a way to build user loyalty. Earlier this year, Google entered talks with several labels to offer free music as a way to help build its China business.

As for Facebook, the social network is working hard to make the jump from startup to established player. Earlier this week, Facebook poached Sheryl Sandberg from Google. The former head of Google sales and operations will serve as COO at Facebook.
