Cuban: blogging doesn't pay

Blogging may be the way of the future, reshaping the way we consume news and information, but those looking to make money in the space had better look elsewhere, according to Mark Cuban.

Cuban, the outspoken technology guru who blogs at blogmaverick.com, told The New York Times that his blog, which Technorati ranks in the top 1,000, is no way to make a living.

According to Cuban, blogging is more about passion than profit.

But Cuban's comments, which were directed at would-be bloggers, don't mean the space can't be monetized. Blogs have been a bonanza for Google, which has made a fortune putting its Ad Sense ads on countless blogs of varying descriptions. But little cash ever reaches the bloggers themselves, who are awarded a few cents when someone clicks on an ad, but only paid when their account reaches $100.

Interestingly, the news that few blogs are themselves profitable -- hardly a revelation -- comes days after The Economist bashed the idea of attempting to monetize social networks. Like social networks, blogs have become ubiquitous. However, few advertisers have found a way to interject ads into the conversation while bringing profitability to publishers.
