MySpace launches Latino content

MySpace is saying "hola" to U.S. Latinos by launching new exclusive content in Spanish and Portuguese.

The year-old MySpace Latino will feature new communities focused on Latino bands and soccer, among others. Previously, MySpace offered Spanish translations of its English content.

Three-quarters of English-speaking U.S. Hispanics are online, up from about half in 2002, according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project. Only 32 percent of Hispanics who speak mainly Spanish use the internet.

The move comes at a time when both Facebook and MySpace are dipping their toes into international waters in the hopes of gaining more members and page views. MySpace had an early lead in the international market, offering its pages in 13 languages including French, Japanese and Italian. Facebook launched its own Spanish version in February, followed by a German launch in March.
