IAC goes niche

When we last heard from IAC, the company was in the midst of a power struggle between chief Barry Diller and Liberty Media Chairman John Malone.

Diller emerged victorious, and he is going ahead with plans to launch several websites aimed at niche audiences and to spin off four of IAC's businesses.

The first new site is RushmoreDrive, a search engine aimed at the black community, which launched on Thursday.

Rushmore analyzed five years worth of data about what black users were searching for from Ask.com, another IAC company, to develop technology that blends mainstream results with black-pertinent topics. A search for "George W. Bush," for example, yields the official White House website as well as articles about the president and the black community.

Johnny Taylor, chief executive of IAC's Black Web Enterprises unit, told Reuters that the search technology could be used for other groups and communities if it is successful.

"It is not to be confused with a black search engine," Taylor said. "One analyst described this as identity search. We have built this technology not for a black patent ... but for a technology that should work in any of the identity groups."

IAC also plans to launch a personal-finance site along with websites aimed at pre-teens and news-savvy professionals.
