Search boils down to 3 classes

Got a search engine? Odds are people are using it to find one of three things, according to a first-of-its-kind Penn-State research study.

The study examined 1.5 million queries from hundreds of thousands of searchers across multiple engines and found 80 percent of searches can be classified as informational, meaning the searcher is looking for a specific fact or piece of information.

Navigational searches, or those looking for a specific website, account for 10 percent of all searches, while the remaining 10 percent are transactional, with users seeking products or services.

Study leader Jim Jansen believes his team is 74 percent accurate and will continue researching with a more advanced algorithm in the hopes of increasing accuracy to 90 percent.
