Google to beef up MySpace search

Finding anything on MySpace has been something of a challenge almost since the beginning of the popular social network. But soon the News Corp.-owned property will be able to better serve its users with a little help from Google, which has agreed to provide search software to MySpace.

Google, which already sells ads for MySpace, will use its Gears product to help MySpace users better search their emails, according to a Reuters report.

MySpace, which claims 110 million users, estimates that the site's members send more than 170 million messages to each other daily. But to use the new Google feature, MySpace users must download Gears separately.

The announcement comes amid growing tensions between Google and MySpace's chief rival -- Facebook. All three companies are fighting to control data portability as social networks are increasingly seen as hubs through which many users access the larger web.
