Taking down Google's search business -- or at least carving out a small hunk of it -- has become something of a cottage industry. While startups like Mahalo, the human-powered venture from Jason Calacanis, and Wikia, Jimmy Wales' attempt to blend search with wiki culture, have dominated the limelight, a new contender has entered the fray.
According to TechCrunch, a new search engine known as YouBundle could be coming out of stealth mode rather soon. The site, which is still invite-only, doesn't have a lot of results just yet, but what it does have is a slightly unique take on search.
Rather than building an exhaustive list of resources, YouBundle has asked its community -- all volunteer editors -- to compile bundles of resources on any given topic.
"You should consider a bundle your work of art. Remember, the purpose is not to get as many links as possible. The purpose is to create a well balanced bundle with many different types of links of only the highest quality," YouBundle's beta tester guide reads.
As for how the results -- bundles -- are organized, that decision is left up to the community rather than an algorithm. Users can tag bundles as being in violation of the terms of service, spam or porn. But users are also allowed to help rank the bundles by "bumping" or "dumping" results based their utility.
