For all the hype surrounding the mobile platform, it appears everyone forgot to make sure the mobile internet actually works.
According to a new study by digital shop AKQA and mobile web domain provider dotMobi, 44 percent of users had a bad experience in their first use of the mobile net. Slow connection speeds, poor display and cost all contributed to dissatisfactory experiences.
Initial turnoffs aside, 90 percent of the 2,000 respondents said they were interested in learning more about the mobile web and its potential.
The survey also revealed that consumers are using the mobile net for information, rather than entertainment, with three-quarters saying they would like to access maps via their handsets. So while marketers are leaping at the chance to develop games and applications for the new iPhone, the device's best feature may simply be the ability to consistently connect to Google.
