Is it real news footage? That's the question Gatorade has YouTube fanatics asking themselves about the company's latest ad.
The viral clip, which has amassed more than 1 million views on YouTube, according to a report in The Chicago Tribune, features a gravity defying catch from a ball girl at a minor league baseball game.
The clip begins as if it is nightly news sports footage, when a batter lines a hit deep to left field. As the ball curls into foul territory and the left fielder gives up on the play, a ball girl appears from out of nowhere, leaps up against the wall and uses her legs to catapult herself to even greater heights. After nonchalantly making the impossible catch, the ball girl jogs back to her seat where a small bottle of Gatorade sits next to her chair.
That subtle ad, which was posted earlier this month, has reached a tipping point, according to Jill Kinney, a Gatorade spokeswoman. The company estimates that the video has received more than 1 million views on YouTube -- the precise number isn't known because fans have reposted the video all over the site. Kinney also said that the video has become the most shared clip on Break.com, a site that focuses on a predominantly male audience.
The ad has also achieved notoriety in the mainstream press, with "Good Morning America" calling attention to the spot.
As for the mild deception, few fans seem to mind.
"I love the fakeness [sic]. But I really thought it was real at the beginning," one fan posted on YouTube.
