Is AOL playing games with advertisers?

AOL is forging ahead with its plan to launch dozens of niche websites this year to boost traffic and create more advertising dollars. The latest rollout is BigDownload.com, a video game website that offers more than 400 free game downloads.

A joint venture between AOL Games and Weblogs Inc., the site is geared toward the PC gaming crowd, which is predominantly composed of 18- to 34-year-old men. AOL already offers game downloads via its GameDaily site, but BigDownload will offer far more content -- up to 100 games a month, according to MediaPost.

BigDownload follows a steady stream of new sites from AOL as it makes a focal transition from internet access to advertising. Like other sites AOL has unveiled this year, BigDownload will offer custom ad opportunities, such as a sponsored download button.
