Choosing which keyword to bid on can be equal parts science and luck, but a new tool from Google aims to help marketers make better informed decisions when they allocate their search budgets.
Writing on the company blog, Trevor Claiborne, a member of Google's AdWords team, announced that keyword buyers would now have access to search volume data.
"Now, when you use the Keyword Tool to search for relevant keywords to include in your keyword list, you'll be able to see the approximate number of search queries matching your keywords that were performed on Google and the search network," Claiborne wrote.
The enhancement is likely to win praise from buyers who will now operate with better insights on what users are searching for. While that may seem like a lot for Google to give up, the search giant is actually moving forward with its own project to see if search queries can boost ad relevance. If successful, Google will be able to better understand not just what users are looking for in a given search session, but how they go about making their purchasing decisions.
