Consumers rank top search engines, portals

Google has captured the top slot for consumer satisfaction, according to data released by The University of Michigan.

The data comes from The American Customer Satisfaction Index, a project at The University of Michigan that ranks companies across a variety of sectors.

While Google was No. 1 with a score of 86 (up from 78 the previous year), Yahoo took home the top slot for a portal, achieving a score of 77. But that's not great news for Yahoo, which slipped down from its previous score of 79 last year. MSNBC.com, ABCNews.com and MSN rounded out the top five.

Unsurprisingly, most of the scores tend to track with market share data compiled by firms like Hitwise and comScore.

As for Google, the survey's biggest winner, it's unclear why the search giant grew so much when admittedly it changed very little with respect to the consumer experience. Some have attributed the rise in satisfaction to a halo effect for the company, and it's worth noting that Google has become so synonymous with search that a startup recently cloned the company's interface and promised the exact same results as Google without returning Google-owned properties, dubbing its product "Google Minus Google."
