Two wrongs don't make a right, but executives at AOL and Yahoo may be hoping that two slumping internet companies may become one web juggernaut. According to a TechCrunch post, AOL and Yahoo are rumored to be close to coming to terms on a merger deal.
While the current round of rumors has the two announcing a merger at the end of the month, it's worth noting that AOL and Yahoo have been down this road before.
Rumors of a deal between the two heated up again last month after Yahoo finally put to rest its long fight with Microsoft and activist investor Carl Icahn.
Yahoo, which has been struggling to sell the advertising world on its new ad platform, seems to be convinced that the new platform would help AOL monetize its impressions more than if AOL went it alone. The deal would also give the combined companies a dominant position in the portal market. However, it's not clear how much the portal market will be worth going forward as social networking eats away at that model.
