Surf globally, Digg locally

At a time when a global economic crisis has many companies cutting back, Digg is staffing up as part of a new initiative to localize the social news site.

Digg, which boasts 30 million monthly visitors, had long been rumored as a likely acquisition for either Google or Microsoft. But founder Kevin Rose isn't selling, instead he's planning to launch local versions of Digg in Europe and Asia.

To help launch Digg globally, Rose is said to be in the process of doubling his workforce.

But while Digg may be in the process of expanding, it hasn't come close to determining how best to monetize its traffic. The company is still run on venture capital and Rose reportedly secured an additional $28.7 million in funding last month to finance this latest expansion.
