YouTube becomes giant TV station

YouTube will still be the world's largest repository of short-length amateur video, but it will also become an internet-sized television station now that the Google-owned company has cut a deal with CBS to air some of the network's shows with commercials before, during and after each episode.

According to a Reuters report, YouTube, which has been under steady pressure to find advertising revenue, is in the process of inking similar deals with other Hollywood studios and networks.

"It's all about advertisers maximizing their reach and using the most effective ad format for where the user might be situated," said Shiva Rajaraman, a senior product manager for YouTube.

While not all of the shows included in the deal have been made public, YouTube is known to be working on a premium viewing experience for content that includes old episodes of "Star Trek," "Young and the Restless" and "Beverly Hills 90210."
