Email security company Postini announced that spam accounted for approximately 75 percent of all email processed by Postini in September.
Postini noted that sexually explicit email has been reduced by 78 percent since January 2004. Sexually explicit email, which accounted for 3.2 percent of all spam in January, was down to 0.8 percent in September.
"Although the reasons are unclear for the extreme drop in sexually explicit email since January, it's gratifying to know that the spammers have moved on to less offensive types of spam. Postini customers have always been protected from sexually explicit spam but no one should have to put up with this vile form of email," says Andrew Lochart, director of product marketing, Postini.
September saw Microsoft's most recent attempt to thwart spammers through the creation of an email sender authentication program reach an impasse with the dissolution of the Internet Engineering Task Force anti-spam working group.
