America Online Inc., is developing desktop search technology that is expected to be a part of the upcoming AOL browser, which is in beta, the Associated Press reported.
The AOL Desktop Search allows users to search for various files including: Microsoft Word documents, Excel, Power Point, Web pages visited, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), digital media and pictures. The AOL Desktop Search is believed to be based on Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer browser, the AP reported.
AOL Desktop Search will be in direct competition with the Google Desktop Search, which was released last week. Both Yahoo! and Microsoft are expected to enter the desktop search industry, the AP reported.
AOL has remained reticent regarding the development of AOL Desktop Search, the AP reported.
