TiVo Addresses Ad Skipping

The Los Angeles Times reported that by March 2005, TiVo will launch pop-up billboards and advertisers' logos over TV commercials as viewers fast-forward through them.

The new TiVo pop-ups will also offer content entries, giveaways or links to other ads. TiVo viewers may opt-in to the ad with their contract information downloaded to that advertiser, the LA Times reported.

TiVo is also expected to launch a commerce system in late 2005 that enables viewers to purchase products and participate in surveys using their remote controls. TiVo currently records viewers' habits for market research purposes, the LA Times reported.

"TiVo looked like it was going to be the weapon of mass destruction of Madison Avenue. However, we knew that the TV spot ad would not go gently into the night, and this is the next battle strategy," Robert Thompson, professor of television and pop culture, Syracuse University, told the LA Times.
