Yahoo! Inc. announced the launch of Yahoo! SMS (short message service) Search and the mobile enhancement of Yahoo! Search on major U.S. wireless carriers and mobile devices.
Yahoo! SMS Search and Yahoo! Search on Mobile enable mobile consumers to interact with search-related information. The information available includes local businesses, weather reports, stock quotes and more.
The free mobile search services are available to non-Yahoo! members.
"The impact of mobile utilities has yet to be fully realized. While utilities may capture early adopters, the practical nature of these tools has yet to penetrate the masses. While mobile services are beginning to take off with the major portals, first with Google and now Yahoo! usability, penetration and overall adoption still has few major obstacles to overcome," says Kevin M. Ryan, search editor, iMedia.
Yahoo! SMS Search works when a consumer sends a shortcut search term text message to Yahoo! (92466). A text message response will be sent to the consumer's phone with the search results. Yahoo! Search mobile is a streamlined version of Yahoo!'s Search portal for mobile devices.
"We know that today consumers are on the go with their mobile phone and our search services represent a new way for them to get the relevant information they need quickly by using Yahoo!. Yahoo!'s search services and shortcuts on mobile devices let consumers get the information they need -- from finding the latest weather forecast, to updated stock quotes, to tracking down a good place to have lunch -- from wherever they are," says Doug Garland, senior vice president, Yahoo! Mobile.
Yahoo! has not announced any plans to serve ads within their new mobile products.
