Fox News shuns MySpace

So much for corporate synergy. Despite a relationship with MySpace via its News Corp. parent, the Fox News Channel has elected to use Facebook to bring in a greater audience.

On Tuesday, Fox is expected to roll out a redesigned Facebook page, according to The New York Times.

The new page will include the full array of Facebook offerings as well as the ability for users to watch, share and comment on Fox videos from the Facebook interface.

According to Joel Cheatwood, SVP for development at Fox News, the decision to link up with Facebook -- as opposed to corporate cousin MySpace -- had to do with demographics and reach. "[Facebook is] currently the leading social network," he said. "They also have a user that's a little older and a little more sophisticated."

But Fox's decision to use social networking as a means of attracting a new audience for its news products isn't an isolated case. Fox rival MSNBC has an existing deal with MySpace, and the two recently teamed up for a contest to send two users to the national political conventions.
