Google offers insight into search behavior

Google has launched an extension of its popular Google Trends product designed to help marketers and advertisers understand and analyze search behavior like never before.

The new tool, called Google Insights for Search, lets users simply type in a term and see search volume patterns over time, similar to Google Trends.

For example, if a car company wanted to know whether to highlight a new model's fuel efficiency, safety features or engine performance, they can put all three terms into Insights and learn which item searchers are most interested in.

But Google's tool has a lot more bells and whistles than just search volume. Filters let users compare seasonal trends, geographic distributions, category-specific searches and related searches. These filters can be used alone or in conjunction with one another to get super specific behavior analysis.

Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Land gave the tool a test drive and was able to narrow his focus to find that most sports-related searches in New York over the past 30 days came from Buffalo and New York City, the home cities of the state's NFL franchises.

Insights for Search also has a feature called "rising searches" which lets users see searches that have experience significant growth in a given time period.
