Millions flock to watch online video of inauguration

Internet traffic spiked on Tuesday as masses of people attempted to access online video of the presidential inauguration ceremony -- though users experienced mixed results as some websites struggled to accommodate the surge of visitors.

Bloggers complained about the websites that were ill-equipped to handle the demand for online video of the inauguration. Online video was in high demand and low supply for many users, as traffic surpassed even Election Day statistics, according to The New York Times. CNN.com experienced 21.3 million video streams in nine hours, dwarfing the 5.3 million streams from Election Day. Those who could not access the live feed were sent a note saying that the website was working on delivering a working stream as soon as possible.

People weren't just watching and blogging about the ceremony -- they were tweeting, too. Twitter experienced five times the normal tweets-per-second, and although users experienced a few delays, the website successfully survived the massive peak in usage at the time Barack Obama was sworn in. Meanwhile, smaller commercial websites experienced a drop in traffic at the same time that traffic to social and media websites flourished.
