In the middle of 2001, we were working feverishly to put together the first iMedia Summit. The idea was simple: bring together people who were as passionate as we were about the future of the internet and give them a forum to learn and network in hopes of fostering the growth of a new advertising medium. But events on Sept. 11 of that year threatened the very existence of iMedia. How do you get 150 digital media professionals to fly when planes are grounded indefinitely?
Well, as we all know, the planes were not grounded for long. But to say that we were deflated and questioning our fledgling company's chances would be quite an understatement. However, quite unbeknownst to us, the community of people we had intended on bringing together at the event had no intention of letting iMedia fail. Despite our inclination to move on and forget it, we were persuaded to postpone our first summit for only a month. That was our first indication -- and a strong one at that -- that we were on to something special. This community, even in its infancy, had power.
