Generation X vs. Millennials

The major difference between Generation X and Millennials is civic participation. Gen X is interested in individual freedom and responsibility. They were raised at a time where protests, revolutions and collective action were perceived as fringe movements. The internet, social media, and technology have made Millennials community activists in every area of their lives. They prefer collective decision making and consensus. They reject a "go-it-alone" way of operating in society and embrace rebellion to the status quo. Generation X are high-risk takers, as opposed to Millennials, who prefer safety and security. They also have a higher connection and a more involved relationship with their parents. Millennials are obviously also more active on mobile, but are incredibly keen on customization and personalization -- much more so than Generation X.

Morley Winograd is an expert at analyzing the various generations. As partner at Mike and Morley, LLC, his job is to understand the key ways these groups differ and how they should be approached. Here's his perception on what makes Generation X and Millennials unique.

Millennials vs. Plurals

Unlike Millennials, the Pluralist Generation will be the first majority non-white generation in American history. This means that not only will the mindset of inclusiveness and tolerance expand -- it will skyrocket. Plurals will be exceptionally diverse and accepting of race, sexual orientation, and varying lifestyles. Plurals also take their cues from peers and influencers online. Social networks are not enough for this generation: they want to be content creators and make an impact. They quantify their social value. This group is empowered by technology to take the lessons from Millennials' online behavior and turn up the dial.
